Booking an MUA: What To Expect

Hey bestie!! Today on #ListenToKristin we’re gonna go over what you should expect from a session with a makeup artist! I hope this will be helpful if you’re a first timer when it comes to having your makeup done by someone else or even wearing a full face at all. We’re going to walk through it all from booking through completion. Let’s get started.

Finding An MUA

It’s important to find an artist that’s capable of achieving the look you want. If you’re a first timer, that can be easier said than done. I recommend asking friends or making suggestion posts on social media for recommendations. Look at portfolios, social media and websites to see what types of looks the artist has posted. If you see something you love, you might be in the right place!

Booking

So you found their social media or website and love a look (or ten lol). Now you’re ready to book. Most artists will have you either submit an inquiry/book on their website or send a message on social media. They should confirm their availability and go over the type of look you’re trying to achieve. If they don’t ask what look you’re going for, I’d consider that a red flag. It’s fine to explain the look verbally or share any inspo photos of looks you like, either from their social pages or elsewhere. Once you confirm they’re available and can execute the look you want, it’s time to book!

Deposits

Most artists require deposits to book. This helps weed out those that tie up their schedules and then cancel. It happens A LOT!! Even a small deposit tends to deter people from booking if they don’t fully intend on coming to the service. Be sure you’re aware of their deposit policy BEFORE booking! Some will allow you to reschedule without losing your deposit. Others won’t. Save yourself the heartache and know what the policy is before handing over any money! If it’s unclear, ASK.

Travel

For artists that travel, be sure you’re clear on their travel fees and whether or not it’s included in the price of the session.

Before Your Appointment

Use the time between booking and service to finalize your vision for your look. Have an idea of what eye look you want, what lip color, do you want lashes, etc. If you want the artist to have free reign, that’s usually ok too! Bounce ideas off of them and ask any questions you may have. It’s also pretty helpful to show them what clothes you’ll be wearing if this is for a special occasion. That helps make sure the whole look will flow properly.

The Fun Stuff

Your appointment is here! Yay! The artist should come with all of the products and tools you’ll need. With that being said, if you have a certain product that you just love and want them to use, speak up. Some people have a foundation or concealer that they swear by; if that’s you, bring it!

You should also consider lighting. Many homes don’t have great lighting, so they may bring their own. If possible, it’s best to set up in front of a window with good natural lighting. Natural light is a girl’s best friend!

Be Honest

BE HONEST with your artist! Everyone has their own taste and this is your face. If something isn’t to your liking, don’t be shy sis! You don’t like the way something looks or feels? Let them know. They can’t fix it if they don’t know about it. This is a great self-care tip in general. Advocate for yourself. Ask for what you want. Don’t settle for less because you’re afraid to speak up. Your goal is for you to leave feeling catered to, flawless and ready to go strut your stuff. If you’re not there, you’re not done yet!

Payment

Be sure you’re clear on when payment is due and what payment methods they accept. You should have discussed the total fee for the service at booking, so there shouldn’t be any surprises.

Get out there and slay!
